Dena Bauman, the Director of the Career and Professional Development Office and an Adjunct Professor, is the driving force behind the office’s offerings. Not only does she oversee the operations of the office but she also provides counseling services to students and alumni and assists them in finding employers in their practice area of choice. She offers resume building services, performs mock interviews, and guides new graduates in the process of identifying their professional strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, Bauman co-directs the Internship Program, which allows students to earn academic credit in exchange for legal work performed in judicial, government, and public interest areas.
Prior to joining the Career and Professional Development Office, Bauman served as a supervising attorney at DC Law Students in Court. Before that she was the managing attorney and pro bono director at Mid-Hudson Legal Services in Poughkeepsie. Her legal career began at the Monroe County Legal Assistance Corporation (MCLAC) in Rochester, New York, where she represented low-income clients in state and federal court. During her time with MCLAC, she designed an award-winning community service project for the Monroe County Bar Association’s Young Lawyer’s Division.
Bauman currently functions as a member of the Nominating Committee of The Association for Legal Career Professionals (NALP), serving as the Mid-Atlantic law school representative. She is regularly called upon to present at NALP conferences and also co-authored of one of the chapters of the NALP Law School Guide to Public Interest Careers. From 2007 to 2008, she served as the regional representative for the Mid-Atlantic law schools and also assisted in the planning of the 2008 Toronto conference.
Bauman holds a JD from Cornell Law School, where she was presented with the Seymour Herzog Memorial Prize in recognition of her public interest work. She earned an MA from the University of Chicago and completed her undergraduate studies at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.
